ChatGPT

Overview — ChatGPT is an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI (launched in 2022) that uses natural-language processing to understand and respond to human language and to generate human-like text, answers and other content.

How it is used — Teams across the Scottish Government use ChatGPT in a number of ways, which may include desk research, exploring alternative approaches and generating ideas, assisting with formatting content, or creating images to support work. This record covers standard ChatGPT use across the core Scottish Government.

Scope and limitations — Corporate guidance advises that no personal or sensitive data should be entered into ChatGPT, to avoid any risk to Scottish Government data. The tool also has limitations: it may occasionally generate incorrect information or produce biased content, and its knowledge of world events is not current.
