Seals in rivers detection system

Overview — This system uses machine-learning algorithms to detect seals from sonar footage in river systems. It aims to let an acoustic deterrent device operate with little manual intervention, so a triggered deterrent can be used 24/7, which is impractical with a manually triggered system, to prevent seal-salmon interactions.

How it is used — The Sea Mammal Research Unit at the University of St Andrews is developing a paired ""detect and deter"" system, with grant funding from the Scottish Government, to minimise seal interactions with wild Atlantic salmon in Scottish rivers. The detection system is being developed using sonar footage of seals in Scottish rivers and will identify seals travelling upriver and trigger the deter system, deterring them from entering the upper river and preying on wild Atlantic salmon.
